From Tradition to the Future…

Turkish Society of Rochester Mosque (Rochester, NY)

Turks, who first arrived in Rochester in 1963-64, have striven to maintain their connection with their country and their religious and national ties. Our citizens, striving to preserve their identity, have never hesitated to support our country whenever our state and nation needed it. From the aid provided during the Cyprus Peace Operation with three truckloads of food to the aid provided for the major earthquakes that struck our country in 2023, they have provided both cash and in-kind assistance to our country in every time of hardship.

They officially established the society in 1969 under the name TSOR (Turkish Society of Rochester), and in 1979, they moved into its first building and gave it an institutional identity. The Rochester Turkish community, striving to fulfill their religious obligations, held Friday prayers in various mosques, Tarawih prayers in each other's homes, and Eid prayers in sports halls and churches until 1980. From 1980 to 1996, they held their worship in a small shed next to the society, led by volunteers. This place of worship, which had a capacity of 80 people, was served by İsmail Başaran, appointed to a two-year term by the Presidency of Religious Affairs in 1996. This service, which was later continued by Mahmut Taşyapan, İshak Kızılarslan, Sinan Çetin, and Osman Memiş, is currently carried out by Adem Sağer.

Since the society's move to its current location in 2007, social, cultural, national, and religious services are now carried out under the same roof. The Tsor Diyanet Mosque, which has a capacity of approximately 80 people, continues its religious services in a section within the society. The Turkish community first began raising funds among themselves in 1982 to support the construction of a detached mosque, and in 2012, they embarked on the construction of a new mosque, which is currently underway. The new mosque, which will seat approximately 1,000 people, is expected to be opened soon.
