In the 1970s, Turkish immigrant families who had left their hometown began settling in Sunnyside. This community, struggling to cope with the hardships of immigrant life, had no mosque in the area. Men had to travel as far as Brooklyn for Friday prayers. Children also had no place to receive Islamic education.

          After years of patience and perseverance, the community rented the first floor of the building at 45-06 Skillman Street in 2000, and established its own small mosque. Since there was no official imam for the mosque, community members such as Hikmet Sercan Hoca and Mustafa Seçilmiş volunteered to fulfill these duties.

          A few years later, in 2003, the Presidency of Religious Affairs appointed an imam to lead religious services at the Mimar Sinan Mosque. Shortly thereafter, the rented building was put up for sale. The community banded together and purchased the existing building to serve as both a mosque and a community center.

          At that time, a board of directors was formed, with Hüseyin Hatioğlu of the Turkish Islamic Cultural Center-Mimar Sinan Mosque as its first chairman. Over the years, the board has been chaired by the following five individuals:

          Each president has served the community and contributed to its growth. The longest-serving president to date is Mehmet Karakash, who served the community from 2007 to 2020. During his presidency, the building's debt was fully paid off in 2012. The mosque's top floor was renovated in 2019 and transformed into a beautiful classroom.

          On Sundays, boys and girls come to the mosque to learn the Quran and religious information. On weekdays, Quran lessons are held between evening and night prayers. On Friday evenings, talks are held for the women's community.
